Thanks, I got all theinformation I needed in an efficient mannerfrom a very friendly lady. 😆

Excellent starting point, very helpful staff lots of information and maps can help to identify what it is you are after during your visit to York and information about attractions I would not have had such an action packed visit if I’d been left to my own devices

York City Sightseeing

3 Museum St, York YO30 7BN, UK – 01904 634296

From the lovely lady at the ticket office to the clean and comfortable bus, we so enjoyed our 24 hour ticket. The recorded guide is very informative and more than once round, it's easy to retain all the historical facts. A great way to see York and get around.

I really enjoy the journey in the bus. For one hour you can rapidly visit York and know about its history. But I have an important requirement, the service of buses and boats needs scan code machines because they are still asking for printed tickets. Then you need to go first to the visitor center even when you have online tickets. But at the end of the journey I recommend dropping off at Art Gallery and having a delicious ice cream Fresh For You Daily.

Rail Discoveries

Saviour House, 9 St Saviourgate, York YO1 8NL, UK – 01904 734939

A fantastic holiday by rail made better by the new friends we made on the way. The journey down to northern Spain was comfortable and interesting, much better than flying. The hotel was excellent standard and the tour manager, Richard, was fantastic.

We have just returned from a holiday with Rail Discoveries to Switzerland. We received our travel documents from Rail Discoveries but the pack was unclear about how to get from Zurich to Tiefencastel as there were no rail tickets in the pack. This resulted in a phone call to Rail Discoveries who told us the Tour Manager would meet us at Zurich Airport, this should have been explained in the pack. The Tour Manager did ring us a couple of days before departure to explain his plane would be landing approx 20 mins after ours and gave precise instructions on where he would meet us. Our room in the hotel in Tiefencastel was lovely but sadly the dinners let it down. Tiefencastel railway station is at the top of a steep hill which some in our party could not manage although the hotel took them to the railway station in a car. The return journey was awful. We went on the Glacier Express to Andermatt, then we changed trains a further 3 times with very little time given to get to the correct platform if it had not been for our Tour Manager some people would have missed connections, he worked very hard getting peoples suitcases on and off the trains. Thankfully we all arrived together in Basel. The hotel in Basel was lovely and the evening meal was delicious. I wonder though why we had to travel to Basel for our flights home rather than going from Andermatt on a train direct to Zurich with no changes. I cannot sing the praises of the Tour Manager high enough he was very helpful, approachable, patient and gave the impression nothing was too much trouble.

STA Travel

3 Low Ousegate, York YO1 9QX, UK – 01904 206924

All this hate one here. Geeez! I've been using STA Travel for years now and never had any issues whatsoever. I have used numerous stores and like this one, they're always inviting, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. It's best to go in there knowing what you want to do as the options available are vast, depending on budget. I would say if you're looking for a standard beige holiday of lying on the beach use another travel agency, but if you're looking for adventure or volunteer work (which I highly recommend) use STA travel. The guys in the York branch are great, they have always been there to answer my questions via mobile, email or in store. You can also get travel insurance from STA which cuts out any middle man, and its good value too, with a wide range of covers. I would recommend popping in store and picking up a brochure or two, there's so much to look at and consider so take your time, then when you're ready head back to the store and I'm sure one of the lovely members of staff will help you, they have done for me.

Quick and friendly service with a reasonable price

Local Parks & Gardens

Bowls Park

Haxby Rd, York YO31 8JX, UK

A good place to walk dogs @ a children's play area!

Always looks tidy. Good cut through to hospital or Clifton way.

Dean's Park

2 Minster Yard, York YO1 7JJ, UK

Stunning little location that feels spacious and calming even when busy on a hot day! Great for a small picnic. We saw Perigrin Falcons nesting and made a furry friend with an inquisitive Bengal Cat.

Beautiful little park in the shadow of the minster. Not as well known as Museum gardens zo tends to be lots quieter. Lots of locals with kids enjoying a pucnic during the summer months and a lovely place to stroll and enjoy the tranquility away from the hussle and bustle of city centre during the winter. Its my favourite place in the city centre to escape to if I want to enjoy a sandwich in peace. Nice little war memorial at the back, lots of history and plenty of green spaces. You wont believe how quiet it is considering how central it is.

Homestead Park

40 Water End, York YO30 6WP, UK – 01904 629241

Beautiful gardens, lots of play equipment for kids of all ages and great picnic spots. Even when busy it's easy to find a quiet corner out of the sun to read or just sit. The amenities are clean and well cared for, with parking and even a small shop for those essential drinks and ice cream. I've been coming to the Homestead for over 40 years and it is the best it has ever been.

Fantastic 'old school' Park with real flower beds and borders very popular and rightly so it was a pleasure to spend an afternoon here. Full credit to the gardeners here for creating and maintaining this beautiful environment as a public space. Highly recommend a visit.

Great website!. Click below to find gardens open during the year around Linton on Ouse or North Yorkshire. There are photos and lots of detail about the garden.
Fairfax House

Castlegate, York YO1 9RN, UK – 01904 655543

We spent about an hour going through the rooms on a tour of the house by one of the docents. You get a great impression of how the people lived at that time and what they valued. Impressive furniture and paintings. Georgian town house style.

This is the most interesting house I've visited. The story of the family, the story of the futniture, the story of the building and the visual impact of the room settings all add to a very enjoyable visit. The room guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. It's just £6 so good value. No cafe here but as its adjacent to all York has to offer, its not a problem.
